Trump Calls for Jailing of Windy City Leader and State Executive as Military Forces Arrive in Metropolis

Former President Donald Trump on midweek called for the detainment of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, alleging them of not safeguarding federal immigration officers.

"Chicago's Mayor should be jailed for failing to secure Immigration agents!" Trump posted on social media early Wednesday. "Governor Pritzker too!"

The two leaders are members of the Democratic faction.

Trump's statements coincide with the arrival of National Guard personnel in the Windy City area under orders from the federal administration, despite strong objections from state officials including Pritzker and Johnson.

"This represents not the first instance where Trump has sought to have a Black man unjustly detained," Johnson responded on that day. "I'm not going put."

The governor responded via online channels, declaring: "I refuse to yield. Now Trump is calling for imprisonment of elected officials checking his power. What remains on the road toward full-blown autocracy?"

By Wednesday morning, National Guard troops from Texas had arrived at the Elwood army reserve center, a military installation approximately 50 miles from the city, as the federal government pushes forward with its hardline crime strategy and mass deportation efforts.

Trump has labeled Chicago a "dangerous disaster zone", even though police data indicate significant drops in most criminal activities, including homicides.

That day, 200 Texas National Guard troops were expected to deploy to the region, with another 300 Illinois guard forces preparing to mobilize, per sources. Officials reportedly stated the troops would not perform law enforcement duties but would secure federal immigration agents and their facilities.

Military personnel wearing uniforms with Texas national guard patches were spotted at the military facility in the town. Vehicles marked "Disaster Relief" delivered portable toilets and essential items. Mobile units were set up in rows. Extra barriers was placed around the compound.

The Federal Aviation Administration imposed flight restrictions over the army reserve center for safety concerns until early December.

Federal authorities has escalated deportation operations in Chicago in the past month, sparking protests, especially near an immigration center in a Chicago suburb.

Earlier this week, Illinois and Chicago initiated legal action targeting the federal government, seeking to block the National Guard deployment, asking a court to stop what they call "the president's proclaimed 'War'" on Chicago and Illinois, calling it "unlawful and dangerous".

A court hearing on their lawsuit is scheduled for the next day.

The mayor also issued an directive on Monday prohibiting ICE officers and related personnel from using municipal facilities as operation bases for deportation efforts.

Pritzker has charged the president of using military forces as "staged tools" and "pawns".

At a news conference on Tuesday, Pritzker said that the president is attempting to "rationalize and normalize the deployment of armed soldiers under his personal authority."

The historic Posse Comitatus Act limits the military's role in enforcing domestic laws. Yet, Trump has said he would be willing to invoke the emergency powers, which allows a commander-in-chief to send regular army in states that are unable to put down an insurrection or are defying federal law.

After beginning his new administration, the president has sent or discussed sending military units to over ten cities, including Baltimore; Washington DC; New Orleans and California cities like Bay Area and Southern California municipalities, arguing that the armed forces is necessary to fight violence and protect immigration agents.

Data indicates that serious offenses nationwide has declined in the past few years. In the city, for instance, homicides were reduced 31% to 278 through August, per law enforcement reports.

A recent poll released on Wednesday revealed that the majority of US citizens oppose the deployment of troops without an external threat.
