The Legendary Anime Concludes a Quarter-Century Tradition in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with the production studio announcing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and included numerous filler arcs. Starting in the new year, after the current storyline concludes, the anime will go on a three-month break until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, the series will produce two seasons every year for a maximum of two dozen installments. The studio explains this will enable the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more content, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” However, producers conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which means more related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime previously took a half-year break that began in late 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and let the comic to get further ahead to avoid a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The anime greatly benefited from this respite, and it has managed to deliver viewers with countless action sequences, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While a few summary installments appeared during the recent run, the positive effects of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the thick of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the anime. Per the announcement, this may result in one episode of the series adapting a single manga chapter, with some alternatively covering more material or additional to make up for scheduling.

This concludes of an era for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the final major title to abandon the traditional method of creation, which focused on airing for most of the calendar. This explains why iconic series such as Naruto, and naturally itself have numerous side stories, and the quality of the animation can vary widely between one episode and the next. Nowadays, series creation is structured in seasons, with one or two at most coming out each annually, allowing for improved visuals and more faithfulness to the source material.
