"Do you know when you'll be interviewing the band?" a text arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their fourth member."

However, there remains a single issue: I also longs to be Haim's additional sibling. What's more, we are in plentiful company. A host of high-profile admirers have openly begged for the honor.

The evidence suggests a special quality is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career playing gigs at local delicatessens with their family. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy contenders.

In the tradition of the most iconic groups, they're a tight-knit trio. Their videos repeatedly feature them walking in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such boundless joy you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'After your show, I bought a guitar'," says Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That's the greatest honor. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate young girls to start a band."

Award Milestone

The trio are connecting from a break, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently celebrating the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in contention for the award.

"I watch the lists every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the accolade isn't lost on the sisters.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a major step," says Alana. "However we're just thankful for the female artists that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The record was born from a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that unique liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The words follow departures and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they are becoming.

"I love description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to actively work on ignoring the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That newfound confidence required a different sonic direction – more unpolished and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drums.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Collective Camaraderie

The band's candor shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their personal misadventures.

One man ended things with Este over a medical consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Legacy

One can easily sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their position in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide following.

But the band will consistently be their number one commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was little," shares Alana. "There is no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still going strong."
