A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the year before. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a notable expansion of its role in civilian projects. They were executed at an rapid pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party demanded an urgent pause in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was suggested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been operating in full compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and management of these national undertakings.
